The Orange Rev - Album Review

The Orange Rev
WIDE AWAKE, EP

-Reviewed by Monique M. Luna

“What am I dreaming about? Am I Wide Awake? -- Two captivating lyrics off The Orange Rev’s first, and freshly squeezed EP! WIDE AWAKE is an alluring taste of what The Orange Rev is all about. Offering its versatility, and range in musical style, the 5 songs on this E.P will take you for a whirl!

Edgar Barrios (Guitar/Vocals), Elena Castro (Drums), and Elvis Galvez (Bass/Vocals) create an unprecedented sound, combining forms of Grunge, Punk, and Experimental Rock. With opening tracks like “I Want You” and “Sleep,” The Orange Rev set forth an edgy tone of hard hitting drum patterns, fast-acting riffs, and chunked up bass lines. “Sleep is one of my favorite songs to play, because it’s fast-paced and punchy,” says drummer Elena Castro.

The last song titled “More,” brings the EP full circle, with a resonating blend of effects, and ambient vocals. Bassist Elvis Galvez states having approached this song differently, without aiming for a verse-chorus-verse type; “It kind of flows on its own... it’s great!” The band successfully meets claims to aim for variety, and keeps listeners intrigued by introducing sounds that push boundaries, and don’t quite fit the mold of one particular genre (i.e., track 4, Hypnagogia). “Versatility is important...” says guitarist Edgar Barrios, “...as is growing and maturing with sound.” WIDE AWAKE paves the way for The Orange Rev, putting them on the right track with their open-minded approach to making music. So turn on, and turn in! There’s music to be heard!
